Interest Areas for California Occupational Guides

Occupational Guides by Interest Area
Alphabetical List of Occupational Guides

In an effort to assist users in finding related occupations, California Occupational Guides are classified into the 13 Interest Areas described below.

  1. Artistic - An interest in creative expression of feelings or ideas.

  2. Scientific - An interest in discovering, collecting, and analyzing information about the natural world, and in applying scientific Research findings to problems in life sciences, medicine, and the natural sciences.

  3. Plants & Animals - An interest in working with plants and animals, usually outdoors.

  4. Protective - An interest in using authority to protect people and property. This includes law enforcement, firefighting, and private security occupations.

  5. Mechanical - An interest in applying mechanical principles to practical situations by use of machines or hand tools. Jobs range from routine tasks to complex professional positions.

      5-E) Food Prep

  6. Industrial - An interest in repetitive, concrete, organized activities done in a factory setting. This includes setting up machines and supervising other workers in an industrial setting.

  7. Office - An interest in organized, clearly defined activities requiring accuracy and attention to details, primarily in an office setting.

  8. Selling - An interest in bringing others to a particular point of view by personal persuasion, using sales and promotional techniques.

  9. Personal Service - An interest in catering to the wishes and needs of others, usually on a one-to-one basis.

  10. Social Service - An interest in helping others with their mental, spiritual, social, physical, or vocational needs.

  11. Professional & Managerial - An interest in leading and influencing others by using high-level verbal or numerical abilities.

  12. Physical Performing - An interest in physical activities performed before an audience.

  13. Medical or Health - All occupations, including support services, that relate to the medical or dental professions. This includes physical therapy, medical assisting, and the nursing field.
