According to the Employment Development Department's (EDD) annual Labor Day Briefing for 2012, California's employment situation brightened considerably over the last year. From the low point in the recession in September 2009 through July 2012, California total nonfarm payrolls grew by more than half-a-million jobs. Private sector job gains were even stronger.

California enjoyed its strongest pace of job growth in 11 years over the year ending in July 2012, and experienced stronger job growth than the nation as a whole and all but a small handful of other states. Unemployment in California, although still elevated, has fallen steadily. But as encouraging and impressive as these trends were, the state still has a long way to go to recover fully from its devastating 2007-09 recession.

The Size of Business Report for the Third Quarter (July to September) of 2011 is now online. It provides data at the state, county, and metropolitan area levels by size category. Tables for California and the metropolitan areas include breakouts at the major industry levels.

Businesses are grouped by nine size categories:

	*	0 to 4 employees
	*	5 to 9 employees
	*	10 to 19 employees
	*	20 to 49 employees
	*	50 to 99 employees
	*	100 to 249 employees
	*	250 to 499 employees
	*	500 to 999 employees
	*	1,000 or more employees

In the third quarter of 2011, California reported 1,390,289 businesses with 14,697,321 employees and payroll of 198.5 billion dollars.

One of the more interesting comparisons using these data is the distribution of businesses and employment within the size classes. As in recent years, 96 percent of the more than 1.39 million businesses in California have less than 50 employees. Additionally, the smallest size class (0 to 4 employees) accounts for 72 percent of the businesses in the state, but only employ 7.4 percent of California's workers. In contrast, the largest size class (1,000+ employees) accounts for only 0.1 percent of the businesses in the state but comprise 13.7 percent of the California's workers and 20.7 percent of California's payroll.

When looking at the data compared to the third quarter of 2010, the number of businesses increased by 3.41 percent, employment increased 1.53 percent, and payroll increased by 8.0 percent. The breakdown by industry provides a more detailed view of California's current economic state.

The industries with the greatest over-the-year increases in employment are Services (+152,604) and Accommodation and Food Services (+34,158). The greatest over-the-year decline in employment is Federal, State and Local Government (-26,007).

The Size of Business report is released annually in the fall using data from the third quarter which is the most seasonally stable quarter. Statewide Size of Business data are also available quarterly.

The U.S. Census Bureau announced its first mobile application, America's Economy, which is now available for download on Android devices. The first release of the app will provide 16 key economic indicators from the three primary U.S. economic statistical agencies: the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the Census Bureau, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Key economic measures illustrate monthly and quarterly movement in various industries, such as employment, manufacturing, international trade, and construction. These statistics drive core business decisions, such as hiring, sales and production, and also assist essential stakeholders, including policymakers. Other features include:

	•	A detailed page for each indicator with trend data.
	•	The ability to view release schedules for indicators, set-up notifications, and create custom views.
	•	The ability to share indicators on Facebook, Twitter, and via e-mail.

The America's Economy mobile app marks the first step of the Census Bureau's Web Transformation Project and aims to fulfill goals of the President's recently announced Digital Strategy; which intends to give greater public access to government information and available services.

The LMID has released the 2010-2020 Projections of Employment by Industry and Occupation for California.

Available data files include an industry employment data table and narrative, an occupational employment data table and narrative, and tables providing information on the "fastest growing occupations" and the "occupations with the most job openings."

Nationwide online job advertisements decreased in August compared to July levels. California had a decrease of 13,300 job advertisements from July to August 2012. Nationally, the supply and demand rate was three-to-one compared to four-to-one in California. The supply and demand rate is defined as the number of unemployed individuals for every job advertisement. The supply and demand rates varied between the California regions with most having a higher supply and demand rate than the nation. The Bay Area was the only region that had a lower supply and demand rate than the nation.

Most regions in California did not see a significant change in job advertisements from July 2012 to August 2012.
