The U.S. Census Bureau will conduct its five-year census of American businesses, called the
Economic Census, in November 2012. This survey measures our economic activities and has been in business for more than 200 years. In 1810, Congress ordered census takers, in those days federal marshals, not only to count population, but also asked questions on manufactured products. Today, the survey measures the pulse of U.S. businesses from the national to the local level and covers more than 1,000 industries and 15,000 products. It serves as the foundation for the gross domestic product (GDP) and other indicators of economic performance. The Bureau will send the Economic Census questionnaire to more than 4 million businesses in the U.S. The survey data allows business owners to compare their business to industry average in their local area, identify business markets, or use data in business plans and loan applications. Trade associations, chambers of commerce, and businesses depend on this information for economic development, business decisions, and strategic planning.
